Shopping in Thuringia
Shopping is fun in the Free State. Supermarkets, superstores and big-box discounters can meet your day-to-day needs. Shopping malls such as Anger 1, Thüringen Park in Erfurt or the Goethegalerie in Jena provide inviting shopping environments with an attractive selection of products. The city centers are studded with department stores and exclusive boutiques if you want to pick up something or just do some window shopping.
Per-capita retail space in Thuringia is higher than the national average. For every 1,000 inhabitants, the Free State has more than 140 m² of space in shopping centers. In contrast, retail space in nearby Bavaria is much less ubiquitous, with only 100 m² of shopping center space per 1,000 inhabitants. All told, the situation in Eastern German states is much more favorable than in Western German states.
