Fraunhofer Research Center Celebrates Roofing Ceremony of New Building in Hermsdorf

12/04/2012

The Fraunhofer Center for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) will celebrate the roofing ceremony of its new building in Hermsdorf near Jena tomorrow. The project has been subsidized by 18 mio Euro from state, federal and EU funds. Directly adjacent to the existing building, state-of-the-art labs and offices have been built on a surface of about 2,661 m². In future, new materials for environmental process technologies, opto-ceramic materials as well as surface technology solutions for fiber-reinforced composites will be developed here. Thus, Thuringia considerably strengthens its research potential for environmental-friendly energies. The completion of the new building is planned for autumn 2013.

As to the Thuringian Minister for Education, Science and Culture, Christoph Matschie, the development of next generation materials for energy storage, energy generation and environmental technologies will be accelerated in Hermsdorf. "Research institutions like the one in Hermsdorf make a decisive contribution towards an increased use of renewable energies. In this process, new methods for energy storage play a central role." The Thuringian Ministry for Education, Science and Culture supports competence centers in the field of energy research (like the ones in Hermsdorf and Jena) with its research initiative "E to the power of 4".
