Investors like Erfurt more than Berlin or Barcelona
The US American journal "Site Selection" - the official publication of the industrial asset management council - publishes in its recent edition once again various rankings - one of them being very positive for Erfurt.
After Thuringia having being ranked 3 times in a row as place best to invest in Western Europe, this year Erfurt is ranked 8th in the metropolitan areas ranking - before Berlin and Barcelona. The cities on places 1 to 7 are important business hubs such as Dublin, Frankfurt and Vienna.
350 cities in 200 countries have been evaluated. The excellent infrastructure, high qualification level, proximity to suppliers and an interesting mix of companies in Erfurt have led to this great result.
The basis is a database with business relevant information which includes for instance about 150,000 companies and - what is more important - the new and expanded facility investments captured in 2011. Erfurt has attracted some really large investments such as Zalando (2,000 jobs and more than Euro 100 mio investment) and Redcoon (700 jobs and nearly Euro 60 mio investment) who are building huge distribution centers in the Erfurter freight hub GVZ.
But besides the capital city of Erfurt, there are other prospering cities, e.g. Jena, Ilmenau and Eisenach. Jena has been ranked by the Capital journal's city ranking best upcomer with 17 places caught up especially because of its expertise in the medical and optics sector.
Further studies and forecasts present an industry growth of 20% up to 2017 and the business climate is evaluated as "very good" in Thuringia. Thus, Thuringia's economics minister Matthias Machnig sees Thuringia on the right path.back
