Special Fibers for High-Power Fiber Lasers
Together with its industrial partners, the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) in Jena has developed an improved method for the production of high-power optical fibers.
With this innovative material multi kilo watt fiber lasers which produce peak capacities of more than 5 kW laser power only from one glass fiber can be built.
In cooperation with the project partners the new material has been developed so far that first prototype tests at Audi AG and Volkswagen AG for the welding of aluminium and stainless steel could be conducted.
The results of this project attracted international attention and led to new scientific cooperations with universities and colleges in France, Australia and the USA.
Prof Jürgen Popp, the scientific director of the IPHT, describes the fiber technology as a core competence of the institute. He points out that with doing basic research in fiber optics and in technologies for the production of glass fibers, the Leibniz Institute in Jena is able to develop very special fibers for various applications e.g. in biophotonics.
