Strong Business Relations to South Korea
There is a great deal of common ground between South Korea and Thuringia. Especially in the medical and optical industry sectors. In this summer there were opportunities to deepen the relationships of both regions. A delegation from Thuringia visited Seoul and the optics metropolis Gumi. The schedule included company visits e.g. at Hyundai, Samsung and LG.
One of the highlights were the International Optics Symposia which were held in both cities. Keynote speakers referred to the optics competences in South Korea and Thuringia. More than 70 participants from business, science and universities attended each event.
Previous visits in 2011 (to Seoul and Gumi) and May 2012 (to Jena) resulted in signing the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the cluster organizations from Thuringia and Gumi and with the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena.
Another opportunity to strengthen contacts was the "Industry Day - Automotive" in July 2012 under the slogan "New Markets - New Customers". So the organizer "at - automotive thueringen" - the Thuringian automotive industry cluster - put one focus on the development of the automotive industry in South Korea. Beside some speakers from German companies being active in Korea, a representative from the large Korean enterprise SK Innovation gave the audience interesting information about the joint venture with Continental and the battery market among others.back
