Thuringia offers excellent framework conditions for the further development of the timber industry: the region boasts an efficient infrastructure, short distances and a strong network of research, education and practice. Four universities with links to the timber industry and timber construction promote the transfer of knowledge and strengthen the skilled labour base.
The sector is characterised by modern production processes and high-quality timber construction materials, which are used in a wide range of residential and commercial buildings. Trade and industry cover a broad spectrum - from classic building and construction materials to innovative applications in furniture and interior design.
Particularly noteworthy is the service-orientated timber design and timber construction, which combines functionality with aesthetics and offers individual solutions for clients and architects. The range is complemented by industrial prefabrication, which enables efficient and sustainable construction.

Hohe Tanne GmbH from Großbreitenbach
Hohe Tanne GmbH in Großbreitenbach is taking a sustainable approach with the construction of its new production building. The climate-neutral company building was constructed entirely from timber. The energy concept is based on geothermal energy, low-temperature heating and waste heat utilisation. There is also an innovative lighting concept and separate light regulation in each room. So far, the company has saved around 870 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

Oberhof luge track
With the new roofing for the luge track in Oberhof, Thuringia is demonstrating how sustainable high-performance construction and the regional timber industry can work together. The construction, made from customised plywood shells and larch wood slats, comes from local production and was largely prefabricated. This creates added value directly in the Thuringian Forest.

With the new school buildings in Bendeleben and Ilfeld, Thuringia is focussing on sustainable educational construction using almost 100% timber. A specially developed construction system combines proven technologies to create a flexible modular system whose modules are optimised for the delivery and transport dimensions of timber construction elements. The constructions come from regional production and strengthen value creation within the Thuringian timber industry. The high degree of prefabrication and the resource-saving construction method significantly reduce CO₂ emissions.

Holz21regio
Holz21regio pursues innovative projects to shape the timber industry of tomorrow. The aim is to provide producers with information for efficient production planning so that they can better estimate their timber requirements and capacities. One focus is on construction methods using wood for the serial production of buildings, similar to assembly line production. Sensors and warning systems against drought and pests are used to promote healthy forest management. AI helps to automatically recognise forest damage in order to react quickly to diseases. These and other technological developments help to collect valuable information that supports the planning and implementation of technical innovations in the timber industry.
Landesbeirat Wald und Holz Thüringen e.V.
The Landesbeirat Wald und Holz Thüringen e.V. is a registered association that is committed to promoting the use of wood from sustainable forestry. The aim is to establish wood as a climate-friendly raw material, building material and energy source. The advisory board brings together important representatives of the forest, wood and timber cluster and is involved in areas such as the development of regional value chains, the promotion of training and further education and the positioning of the industry in politics and the public.
Thuringia Chamber of Architects
The Thuringian Chamber of Architects believes that architects have a responsibility to design and plan sustainable and future-proof buildings. In this respect, timber construction offers excellent opportunities to generate added value through the choice of materials, innovative design, efficient construction and sustainable operation. In cooperation with the Chamber of Architects, timber construction is increasingly being promoted in all areas - from industrial buildings, schools and kindergartens to private residential buildings.

Timber Construction Atlas Thuringia
The Timber Construction Atlas Thuringia is an online portal that was created as a result of a co-operation between the Landesbeirat Wald und Holz Thüringen e.V. and the IBA Thüringen. Originally conceived as a mobile exhibition, the atlas now offers comprehensive information on timber construction in Thuringia and presents outstanding projects in the region.
In the green heart of Germany, extensive forest resources meet a modern, efficient timber industry. The value chain - from the sawmill to further processing to innovative timber building materials and end products such as building components and furniture - is closely interlinked in Thuringia.

Develops and produces customised prefabricated timber construction elements for industrial and residential timber construction. With high-tech joinery and timber engineering, the company combines industrial prefabrication with on-site craftsmanship, which shortens throughput times and increases quality.
