Thuringia boasts a much diversified industrial sector that ranges from the food to the automotive industry to high-tech industries such as biotechnology and opto-electronics. An efficient craft sector and the growing service sector are further powerful pillars of Thuringia’s economy.
For years, the processing industry have been the engine of economic growth. Its gross value added has doubled in the last ten years and more than quadrupled compared to that of 1991. The share of processing industry in the overall economic output of Thuringia is above the German national average.

Thuringian exports reached a volume of 14.4 billion Euros in 2016.
Vehicle components were the products from the Free State with the highest demand, followed by goods from plastics, electrical devices, measurement and control technology. USA and France rank first and second in Thuringia’s export statistics followed by Hungary, Great Britain, China, Poland and Austria.
