Artemis II: Thuringian expertise en route to the Moon

The first crewed lunar mission since 1972 launched on April 1 of this year. Three men and one woman lifted off on a launch vehicle to orbit the Moon and spend ten days testing navigation, communication, and life-support systems under real-world conditions. None of this would have been possible without outstanding Thuringian-engineered technology. A key component for successful navigation – the star sensor – comes from Jena. It employs high-precision optics and image processing to ensure reliable orientation even in extreme conditions in space. By detecting constellations, the sensor allows the spacecraft to align itself precisely. Minister-President Mario Voigt was able to watch the launch live on screen at Jena-Optronik, the company that developed and produces the star sensor. He noted, “Our engineers deliver world-class work that is sought after around the globe – including by NASA itself.”

The Artemis program is therefore not only a major scientific undertaking, but also an engine for Thuringia as a business and technology hub. The close integration of research institutions and innovative mid-sized companies strengthens international visibility, creates high-quality jobs, and opens up new markets – from aerospace applications to terrestrial spin-offs. Thuringia shows that leading regional expertise can help shape lunar history.

NASA, together with international partners, is advancing humanity’s sustainable return to the Moon with the Artemis program. The latest milestones – from the successful test of the SLS heavy-lift rocket and progress on the Orion spacecraft to the development of the Gateway lunar space station – mark the transition from testing to operational deployment. Europe’s contribution through ESA plays a central role – as does the participation of German and Thuringian companies along the value chain.
